The Colchester and District Friendly Tennis League was established in 1960 by 10 local clubs and exists to give players of a moderate standard a chance of competitive play. Hence, it is intended specifically for older or less experienced players, or for those who simply wish to enjoy less intensive competitive tennis. There are both team and individual competitions. Players who regularly play in the Premier or First Divisions of the Colchester and District League are not eligible to play in any Friendly League event.
The first team league winners were Ardleigh club and the trophy was presented by former Colchester United footballer Reg Stewart.
The Individual Competitions were set up the following year.
For all current activities and current champions see Latest News.
Membership of the League is open to any club whose courts are situated within a twenty-mile radius of Colchester Town Hall.
The Annual General Meeting (and fixtures meeting) will be held on Tuesday 1st April 2025 at The Colchester Officers' Club, St John's Green, Colchester, Essex CO2 7EZ starting at 7.30pm.
If your club is planning on entering teams into the Colchester and District Friendly League this year, or players into the individual tournament, this is a great opportunity to find out about the other teams involved and arrange your fixtures for the year. Generally each club sends one representative but all team captains or representatives are welcome.
This year we are looking to appoint a couple of new committee members to bring our complement back up to six. The only commitment required is to attend the AGM and the finals day of the Individual Tournaments which is held in September. If you, or any other member of your club would be interested please let us know.
